Just debuted for Barca, Rodri speaks frankly about Alvarez

Rodri had a memorable debut at Barcelona and was quickly asked about Julian Alvarez, the team's top target. The Spanish midfielder immediately gave a measured response, especially since the Argentine striker is still under contract with Atletico Madrid.

Rodri officially debuted for Barcelona on the evening of August 18th Madrid time, after completing a transfer worth €76.4 million from Man City. The contract of the 30-year-old midfielder runs until the summer of 2030, including approximately €60 million upfront and over €16.4 million in add-ons. This is a major turning point in the career of the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner.

In his first press conference, Rodri was also asked about Julian Alvarez, the striker on Barcelona's radar. However, instead of delving into the possibility of reuniting with his former Man City teammate, the Spanish midfielder chose to respond cautiously. Rodri said: "I always try to be careful when talking about players from other clubs."

According to Spanish media, Rodri's caution is even more notable as Barcelona is said to have sent an offer to sign Alvarez but it was immediately rejected by Atletico Madrid. Rodri previously played for Atletico before moving to Man City, so he is especially careful not to put additional pressure on his former club. "I have a lot of respect for Atletico Madrid, and he is their player. Deco and the management will do everything possible to strengthen the team," Rodri said.

Earlier, Rodri revealed that Barcelona was always his top priority despite receiving other offers, including from Real Madrid. "Barca has always been my role model at the world level, because of the way the club views football and the values it pursues," he shared. Rodri also believes the team is just one step away from the Champions League after winning La Liga in the last two consecutive seasons.

The 30-year-old midfielder met his new teammates during the medical examination and received a warm welcome. He particularly praised Hansi Flick, and hopes to become a role model for Marc Bernal, just as Sergio Busquets once inspired him. Rodri also thanked Man City after seven years with the club.

Barcelona will open the 2026/27 La Liga season with a match against Elche on August 23. In the context of the club targeting Alvarez to bolster the attack, Rodri's cautious statement shows that he does not want to interfere in the transfer deal with Atletico.
