Vietnam has already secured a place in the ASEAN Cup 2026 final, and throughout that path, the impression of goalkeeper Patrik Lê Giang is evident.

After five matches in the ASEAN Cup 2026, Vietnam has conceded only one goal. While Đình Bắc (5 goals) and Xuân Son (3) frequently grab media attention, Patrik Lê Giang has become the silent hero guiding the "Golden Star Warriors" forward.

Not every match requires him to be heavily involved, but the 1.88m tall Vietnamese-born goalkeeper has still left a strong impression on Vietnam's journey in the ASEAN Cup 2026 so far.

In the group stage match against Singapore, Patrik Lê Giang made two crucial saves in the second half. That was a game where we truly struggled to score against Singapore's frustrating defensive style.

While the forward teammates couldn't breach the opponent's net, the defenders had moments of slackness, giving Singapore chances to create dangerous attacks.

But with his composure and class, Patrik Lê Giang brilliantly resolved the crises. Without those saves from the 34-year-old goalkeeper, Vietnam would certainly have suffered defeat, and our ASEAN Cup journey could have been very different.

In the first leg semi-final win against Malaysia at this year's ASEAN Cup, Xuân Son and Quang Hải were praised by the media for directly or indirectly contributing two goals for Vietnam, but it was Patrik Lê Giang who ensured that victory became a reality with six impressive saves.

Those were interventions that showcased the goalkeeper's excellent situational reading, sharp reflexes, speed, decisiveness, confidence, and proactiveness—qualities that convinced coach Kim Sang-sik to choose him as the starting goalkeeper for Vietnam at this year's ASEAN Cup.

Our centre-backs are not strong in speed and occasionally have moments of gaps or loss of concentration, while the full-backs often leave their flanks exposed. Without Patrik Lê Giang's anticipation and timely blocks, Vietnam could very well have conceded goals against Malaysia.

In just two matches, Patrik Lê Giang has fully demonstrated the qualities of the current number one goalkeeper in Vietnamese football, becoming a truly reliable anchor in defense, instilling confidence and peace of mind for his teammates.

After five matches, Vietnam has conceded only one goal. That goal was in the match against Cambodia, and Patrik Lê Giang was completely blameless for it.

With the impressive form he has shown consistently from the start of the tournament, he is becoming the top candidate for the Best Goalkeeper award. It should be noted that Patrik Lê Giang's most significant rival is Thailand's goalkeeper Kampol, but Kampol has conceded three goals so far, putting him at a disadvantage in the head-to-head race with Patrik Lê Giang.

Ahead of Vietnam is the second leg of the ASEAN Cup 2026 semi-final against Malaysia. We have one foot in the final after a 2-0 victory in the first leg.

With the class, experience, and talent of Patrik Lê Giang in goal, Vietnam has a great chance to successfully defend the Southeast Asian championship.
